Mildred Shafer 1919 ~ 2011 Mildred Shafer, 92, passed away on April 18, 2011, due to natural causes incident to old age.She was born on March 26, 1919, in Gridley, California, to parents August Gattiker and Martha Verena Baltensperger. She married Frank LeRoy Shafer in Carson City, Nevada, on May 16, 1937, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. As a young married she worked as a dental assistant while her husband served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In September 1939, she also was called on a mission and served the last few months with her husband. She worked as an administrative secretary for the Social Security Administration for 24 years. She was an active member of the Church throughout her life and served in many positions including Stake Relief Society President. She and her husband, Frank, completed two missions after their retirement. Mildred enjoyed sewing, gardening, music, cooking, but mostly learning and sharing all she could about holistic living. In the process she came to know and help many people over the span of more than 30 years. She is survived by her five children, Patricia Olson (James), Peggy Robinson (Kenneth), Penny Frandsen (Wayne), F. Lee Shafer (Julie), Judith Erkman (Brent), 25 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Jared Erkman, and her half-brother, Theo Gattiker, brother, Werner Gattiker, and sister, Emily Weeks. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 21, 2011, at 11 a.m. at the Edgemont 2nd Ward Chapel, 555 East 3230 North, Provo, UT. There will be a viewing prior to the service from 10-10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Provo City Cemetery, 610 South State, Provo, UT. The family would like to express their profound appreciation to Life Path Hospice Care, Marleen, Jolene, Sandra and all other for their loving and dedicated service.
