Not much is found in the records about Ambrose Meador, but we do know that he, his wife (name unknown), and a servant arrived in Virginia in late May of 1636.

On June 1, 1636, Ambrose surrendered 150 acres of his Headright to Peter Johnson for the cost of his wife's and slave's passages. This was a very common practice at that time. A Headright was 160 acres and was granted to the head of house upon arrival. Individuals had to work the land and make it productive for 15 years before they could "patent" the land. Until the end of the 15 year period, their names were kept on a "rent" rooster. If the individual bargained for more than one Headright, they served 15 years for each and could not serve them consecutively. The land would then be held until the end of all the 15 year periods.

Ambrose designated his "sonn" Thomas as his "true and lawfull attorney" in his "place and stead" to appear for him in court. Ambrose awarded Thomas 300 acres out of 1000 acres sold to him by James Williamson as payment for his work. Thomas then signed over 150 acres of that land to Richard Tomlynson. These transactions took place between late 1657 and September 1658.

Ambrose was illiterate as he signed his name as a large M on these documents.

Ambrose has been identified as a member of the Puritans of the Jamestown Colony. He called his plantation "Accokeek", an Indian name.
