Ipswich and Thetford GSs;yeoman in Edward IV's household from c1466; fought at Battle of Barnet 14April 1471, Esq. of the Body to Edward IV; Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk1476; MP Norfolk 1478; created 28 June 1483 Earl of Surrey but attainted(as was his father posthumously) by Henry VII's 1st Parliament 1485;attainder reversed 1489 as regards Earldom only; Steward of Household1483-84; Warden of East and Middle Marches; Lord High Treasurer 1501-22;created 10 July 1510 Earl Marshal of England for life; as Lt General inNorth won the Battle of Flodden 9 Sep 1513 over the Scots, for which hewas rewarded by being created 1 Feb 1513/4 Duke of Norfolk withprecedence of any previous Duke of Norfolk (ie. including that of1397)--effectively therefore, a restoration of his father's principaltitle--meanwhile making over the Earldom of Surrey to his eldest son forthe latter's life; married 1st 30 April 1472 Elizabeth (died 4 April1497), widow of Sir Humphrey Bourchier and daughter of Sir FrederickTylney.
