Nathaniel B. Gardner: Served in the capacity of Provate on the company commanded by Capt. Turner, in regiment commanded by Major Van Buren of the N.Y. troops, for 7 1/2 months. A deposition signed by one William Mason testifies that Nathaniel Gardner served in the militia of N.Y. in the counties along the Mohawk durring 1779 or 1780. Was 66 years of age in 1832, so he was only 13 or 14 during the war.
Another brief declares he served as substitute from August 1780 for 5 months. Private in the above command. Also drafted later and served from September 1781 to December 1781, 3 monthsin Company of Capt. Niles. That he resided in Albany at the time he entered service, one of his depositions swearing to his apparent age and reported service is signed by Simeon Bishop, Clergyman, of the State of Ohio, an acquaintance of Nathaniel Gardner, and former resident of Erie County,PA.
Another deposition says he went in as a substitute for one John Cranston, who was drafted, this the first service of Aug 1780. He marched in Company of Capt. Turner to Albany where he joined the regiment commanded by Col. Van Rensaeller and Major Van Buran of Kinder Hook, remained 4 or 5 days at Albany, marched to Schenectady, thence to Johnstown, went in expedition at Cognawa on the Mohawk River, the regiment was divided, 1/2 crossed the river and N.B. Gardner with them, marched in turn to Fort Plain, Fort Plank, Fort Stamira and then returned to Fort Schuyler where they were billected until December guarding the town and taking prisoners of Toris in the surrounding country. His second service was similiar, as he was quartered at Schenectady and his company was employed in scouting for Toris and Indians, "cleaning up" the surrounding country. ( I have a copy of the previous letter).
