The sudden death of Warren WIlliam Hafer, at his home in Abbottstown, which occurred Thursday evening at 7:45 has cast another gloom over the community that within a week has felt the hand of death so sorely on this family. The residents while still appalled at the tragedy which resulted in the death of the wife and child of Frank K. Hafer, who met death by suffocation and burns by the accidental overturning of a lamp Saturday night previous.
Mr. hafer had during the day attended the sale of one of his tenants, Samuel Wehler, about a mile from Abbottstown. After returning home he went to the postoffice and dropped into a store, where he was engaged in conversation for some time, later returned to his residence. While seated in a chair, reading a paper, he was seized with an attack of heart trouble. Mrs. Hafer, observation that he was ill, ran for assistance. Several persons who were at the Altland House actoss the street, responded, and before the arrival of Dr. Wilson Hollinger, carried Mr. Hafer to a couch, here he expired, despite medical attnetion. He was aged 69 years, 5 months, and 11 days.
Mr. Hafer was one of the wealthiest men in Adams County, the owner of a number of fine farms and other valuable real estate in Admas and York counties and Baltimore city. He was also prominantly identified with business interests in Hanover, Gettysburg and other places.

Mr. Hafer was a descendant of one of the earliest setlers of Berwick twonship, Adams County. His grandfather, Sebastian Hafer, lived on a farm, now the Lillich farm, 2 miles below Abbottstown (Berwick Borough) and was on the lest of taxables in 1799. His grandfather Sebastian Hafer, conducted a hotel in Abbottstown in the early days, before the construction of railroads.
Warren W. Hafer was the only child of William Hafer, his mother being a Miss Quigley, of Cumberland county. His father began life a poor man, but at his death in 1884, at the age of 70 yearsm he left a large estate.
Mr. Hafer was married twice, his first wife being Miss Jane Wilson, daughter of Frank Wilson, of Abbottstown. Of this usnion were born four children, Frank K., of Abbottstown, William, of St. Louis, MO; Miss Belle Hafer, now Mrs. W.H. Clapp, of New York City; and a child who died in infancy and was buried with its mother in 1883.
Several years after the death of his first wife, he was married to Miss Emma, daughter of William Wilson of Hellam township, York county, a cousin of his first wife; she survives him with two sons Lavere and Lewis Hafer.
The funeral was held from his late home Monday, March 2, @ 10:30a.m. Interment being made in the Lutheran Cemetery at Abbottstown.
A distressing part of the funeral was the inability of a son and daughter to attend, as both are lying on beds of illness many miles from their native home. Mrs. W. H. Clapp, nee Miss Belle Hafer is suffering from pleurisy at Worcester, MA, and William Hafer, a son is confined to his bed at St. Louis, Mo.

W. Lavere Hafer - New Oxford Item - 2 Jul 1931
Warren Lavere Hafer, 44, retired Gettysburg newspaper publisher, died at his home on Wednesday evening from a kidney condition.
Although he had been in failing health a number of years Mr. Hafer seemed in good spirits when he returned from El Paso, TX, May 20, where he and his family resided the major part of more than five years. His condition took a turn for the worse on Sunday when the kidney condition became aggravated.

Mr. Hafer was born in Abbottstown, a son of the late Willima Warren and Emma (Wilson) Hafer. He attended Gettysburg academy and spent one year at Gettysburg college as a member of the class of 1906. He also attended Haverford college, near Philadelphia, and the Eastman business school, Puoghkeepsie New York.
After completing his education, Mr. Hafer returned to Getysburg and began reading law with the late Charles S. Duncan. While pursuing his study of law, Mr. Hafer became interested in the newspaper publishing business and he acquired an interest in The Gettysburg Times in 1909.
Ill health caused him to sell the newspaper and to seek another climate more conducive to his health. For that reason, he spent most of his time in El Paso, TX, although he often said that while he was away from Gettysburg his heart was always there.
Mr. Hafer was twice married, his first wife, the former Miss Helena Keith, having died a number of years ago. Subsequently, he married Miss Lillie M. Steinour, of Gettysburg, who survives, together with three sons, William Hafer, Gettysburg, and James and Sebastian, at home. One brother L.B. Hafer, William W. Hafer, Vancouver, British Columbia, also survives.
Funeral services were held Sat.
