Added by keithphillipy on 25 Sep 2008 Originally submitted by theothermelissa to Melissa on 10 Dec 2007
He was a first settler of Piscataway. He signed "Oath of Allegiance," 1672, and was approved Sergeant, 1681. Dutch Schepen, 1673. He received his patent for land, May 1, 1697, in right of his late father, Ezekiah Bonham (error for Nicholas Bonham) etc. (ARCH. Vol. XXI, pp. 268 and 281). He gave the name to Bonhamtown, Woodbridge Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey, which is five miles northeast from New Brunswick and is so preserved to this day.
    Events:
1. Will; 6 Feb 1682/83. His will was proved 4 Jan. 1684/5, but witnesses testified on 18 Dec. 1694. His wife Hannah and son Hezekiah were named executors; mention was made of other children ( not named); witnesses included Edward Slater and Isaac Smalley who were also overseers and took the estate inventory on 28 July 1684.
    Marriage Information:
Nicholas married Hannah FULLER, daughter of Samuel FULLER and Jane LOTHROP, on 1 Jan 1658/59 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., MA 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. (Hannah FULLER was born about 1636 in Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA 10 and died about 23 Aug 1686 in Piscataway, Middlesex Co., NJ 10.)
    Marriage Notes:
Of the sons, only Hezekiah Bonham survived or remained in Piscataway, to either perpetuate the name or family, and he soon removed to Maidenhead.
They moved to Piscataway, New Jersey, thus bringing the Edward Fuller line there at an early date.

Update 24/9/2011 Nicholas Bonham was admitted citizen on 3 Oct 1662 because he was "son of a present inhabitant" and no other Bonhams are on record except George.
No age has been given for No Plymouth scholar or "authority" has found proof he was George's son. Seems unlikely but they may not be related. Nicholas would have been only 5 years old without a mother. This would pose the question; did his mother die on the voyage? What happened to Miss Bishop his supposed mother. No mention of her in English or Plymouth records have been presented. Only that she was gone before his marriage to Morton
