Alexander Colwell ROBESON
His middle name may be Caldwell. I also have a birthyear of 1788. He served in the war of 1812 as Capt. of the Light Horse Cavalry. He then moved to TN (One place said VA, but I doubt it) where he purchased 500 acres of land in McMinn County. The Cherokee Indians were in that section at the time, and frequently destroyed the crops of the settlers, but owing to his invariable kindness to them, he was never molested. He was a prominent citizen of McMinn County and was repeated elected magistrate of that county. He was also one of the commissioners appointed to lay out the town of Athens,TN. He joined the Methodist church, and became a local preacher, his house was for many years a regular meeting place for the circuit preachers. He was greatly interested in the Temperance movement. They took in his nephew Elihu and raised him as a member of his family.
One of triplets. Lynchburg VA. was named after this family. IGI Katherine LINCH - Record Batch # 8108502; Source Call # 1260859, Sheet #23. I also had a death place of Virginia, United States. I used Kings Meadow.
Remained in TN for many years and then went to Texas in 1870, where she spent the rest of her life.
At the time of his death, was the oldest living member of the Holston Conference, of the Methodist Church of the South.
After James married, they moved to TX, residing in Montague COunty in the Forrestburg area. James served for 4 years in the 43rd Tenessee Volunteer Infantry. he served under captain R. Bynian. (Source: Emmaretta's "Confederate Pension Application", No 5848).
I also have a 1865 death date but this was before 4 of his kids were born. He was one of the prominent men of Meigs County, TN. He was elected when a comparatively young man, to the office of County Court Clerk, a position which he held until his death, always being re-elected by his fellow citizens, regardless of party affiliation. His good advice constantly prevented, and settled, law suits, and often put an end to old standing feuds among the people of the county.
