Upon the death of her mother, at 5 years, her father left her in the care of Mrs. Deborah King for awhile. She then was in the home of Mrs. John Picket, where she remained for 7 months, when her father remarried and brought the family together under the care of the 2nd wife. A loving relationship developed between Electa and her step mother. This was marked through all the years until their final seperation. Allyn stated that "Mother thought everything of her, and she of Mother".
Soon after the settling in PA, she was married to Benjamin Gardner, and they lived in the region until about 1842-3, when they joined the Mormons, under Joseph Smith and went West. Subsequently they went with Brigham Young in his overland Journey to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake. Since them but little has been known about them by the family in the East.
Someone wrote " It is sad that through so many years of her life, she the only living sister, should have been so widely seperated by distance and faith from her Brothers".
