Samuel Godon Innis and Sarah lived in a log house on the Moses Innis (not related) farm and worked part of Lot 1, Concession 7 for a few years. He grew turnips, potatoes, Indian corn and oats. Thirty acres was wild wood and a few acres were pasture. They moved from Blenheim about 1852 and bought a farm with 100 acres near the village of Hawtrey in South Norwich Township. Samuel became a very productive farmer and in his quiet way became regarded as a 'square dealer' and held much respect in the community. The family supported the Baptist Church. He was active in the township affairs and voted on issues concerning them. In 1856 his father moved to 25 acres adjacent to his farm. His father left much of the farm work to his son James. When James died in 1872, Samuel took over the 25 acres. Samuel only lived four years after his father's death. He was buried in Milldale burial grounds.
Sarah was born on the Stringham farm in the Gore east of Norwich on Dec 30, 1826-from the records acquired by Ralph Warden. This would have been in a Quaker Settlement. The Quakers moved to Canada from Pennsylvania to avoid persecution during the revolutionary war in US. Her granddaughter Hughena Brayley descibed the enormous work they did in order to support their family of 12 children. They mostly milked cows and made the milk into cheese for six months and the remaining months butter was traded for goods. Sarah dried apples and made clothing for her family of twelve from the whole wool that was taken to the weaver to be made into cloth. Her last child, Alice E. was born when she was in her mid forties. It was said that she was loving and kind to her family.

William was Sarah's and Samuel's eighth child and Harold Innis' father. Quoted from Harold Innis' autobiography: while education was undoubtedly restricted the Bible and such religious material as Spurgeon's sermons were read aloud to the family, as my father's ability to quote scripture on almost every occasion attests. My father certainly acquired, as one of the younger members of the family knowledge of farming and particularly in the handling of animals." William had enough education to enable him "to read and to do the necessary fractions in the conduct of ordinary farm business." At the age of 28 William was described as "slight, nearly six feet tall, with dark hair, a short dark beard and moustache and a quiet slow spoken manner." He with others of Samuel's family, had a reputation for "temperance, probity, hard work and honest sobriety." These attributes recommended him very favourably to Mary Adams who became his wife in 1893. Samuel born in 1906 was the youngest of Mary and Williams family. Being the only son left at home, it fell to him to help his father with the ninety acre farm, and ultimately to farm it himself. In 1936 Samuel married Doris Gertrude Gould. They had two children. When the time came for Samuel Innis to retire from the farm it was bought by the Harold Innis Foundation of the University of Toronto to use as a retreat for scholars.
