A letter from the Public Archives of Canada dated April 25th, 1950 gives the following information. "According to the Protestant register of Montreal, 1766-1787, one Joseph Griffin was born on June 16, 1786, and was baptized at Montreal, on June 25, of the same year. The name of the parents is not given." It is likely a record of our Joseph Griffin.

Notes:
Little is known of Sarah. Yvonne Griffin McNees has a record that shows that Albert Griffin states that his mother was Sarah Benedict. We know that her name is included on the tombstone with her daughter Catherine Hilliker in Lynnville Cemetery in Norfolk County, Ontario Canada.

Sarah's birth is listed in most sources as 10 Feb 1787 in South East, Dutchess, New York. FamilyTree lists a birth of 31 Oct 1796, same location. Possible parents are Jacob Benedict and Dorcas Rescue/Ruscoe.

There is a newspaper clipping on file at the Norwich Archives of a poem dedicated to the memory of William Griffin who perished in the Dakota Storm March 11, 1892. (I believe the date was actually March 8 1892 because he must have been with Wilbur Griffin the day he also died)

Notes:
Joseph was probably born East Flamborough since his older brother was born there, although in the 1891 Census he says he was born in US. In the 1881 MFHC film # 1375903 he gives his origins as Quebec. The 1851 census lists him as a carpenter and a joiner. Later census records list him as a farmer. At the time of his death he lived at Concessions 9, Lot 2. Local records show that he was a 'figure' in the community. He was one of the directors that established the Cemetery Company. His son James was a member of the first Park Board in 1891. The Norwich Gazette of May 9, 1907 gives his date of death as May 4, 1907.

The Norwich Gazette of Aug 7, 1884 has this interesting item, "Mr. Joseph Griffin has returned from a prospecting tour through Dakota and gives a very interesting account of the country. It is his intention to move there as soon as he can get rid of his land here at a fair figure." This is particularly interesting because although he did not move two of his sons did move West - Wilbur and Francis Edward.
