Justus A. Griffin comments p. 25 in his book 'A pioneer Family' that Thomas, a lieutenant in a loyal colonial regiment was captured with a number of other loyalist, among them his brother Obadiah and a cousin names Joseph Griffin. They were imprisoned in Albany jail. They were tried and sentenced to be hanged for accepting a commission in the British service. Thomas knocked down the jailor with his handcuffs, took his keys and the group escaped. Joseph escaped to Canada and years later gave evidence at the sittings of the court appointed to adjust loyalist claims. Army records show that he resided in the fall of 1783 with his Regiment Jessups Rangers. Loyalist claim 807 ... appeared with two underage brothers. He joined Burgoyne in 1777; also produced certificate dated 27 November 1783 from Jessup. He also procuded a affidavit from Hannah Allen re his father Isaiah Griffin's estate. The "1784 Provisioning Lists' show a wife and 2 girls under 10 years of age with him in Elizabethtown, (Brockville)Old UELlist states "is resident in Montreal" (This is interesting because records show that a Joseph Griffin was born in Montreal.) He is shown in Elizabethtown census with children: Hannah, Phebe, Rhoda, Ortha, Joseph Jr., John and Abel.
2. Petition to the Province of Upper Canada #27 gives Eunice maiden name and father's name.
Hannah's marriage to Zacharia Hagerman is listed in "Like Rabbits in Ernestown" by Russ W. Waller, UE Her marriage to Joseph Wooley probably took place about 1802 because she was still a Hagerman in May of 1801. Her marriage to Peet Seeley on 17 Jan 1837 is listed in the Leeds & Grenville Counties Marriage Register. Her UE land claims are listed as follows: OC 26 May 1801 as Mrs Zacharia Hagerman OC 22 Feb 1810 as Mrs. Joseph Wooley OC 20 Jul 1837 as Mrs Peet Seeley
The 1784 Provisioning Lists show that Joseph has a wife and two daughters under the age of ten with him in Elizabethtown..Loyal Rangers. OC 23 Feb 1809
OC 26 Nov 1823
OC 6 Dec 1808
