Isaiah GRIFFIN
Alfred moved to Clarke Township, Durham County in 1837. According to an item in "Twice Told Tales" from the "Athens Reporter" dated November 16th, 1898, Alfred left home in 1837 walking through the woods with a pack on his back to the river (St Lawrence) where he took a steamer to Port Hope (on Lake Ontario). From there he walked to Newcastle where he now owns a fine farm and stone residence. Griffin told a story of the time he and several others were going to meeting one Sunday riding in a box in an ox-cart. Dennis Cain was walking ahead leading the oxen. The box became unfastenned and fell to the ground with its load, but neither Cain nor the oxen ever looked back but went on as if nothing had happened - in spite of their cries to stop.
