Notes:
The surname Oberlin is a very rare name, comparatively speaking, and appears to be locational in origin. Research indicates that it can be associated with the Germans, meaning, "one who came from "Oberland" (upper Linder tree). Note: this information should be put with the oldest generation information as it is added. From the archives of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio, U.S.A. from an e-mailreceived 10/20/1998 by Carolyn Howard: Oberlin College was established in 1833 by two young Yankee missionaries - Rev. John J. Shipherd and Philo P. Stewart. They were inspired by the example of Alsatian pastor, John Frederick Oberlin(1740-1826). Thus, J.F. Oberlin was not the founder of Oberlin College. A source that may include genealogical information in titled " John Frederic Oberlin" by John W, Kurtz ( Westview Press, 1976). It should be more thourghly researched asto whether George's middle name was actually Allen. Larry Bosley's information has his date of birth as September 25,1785. Vivian Tubbs information says he wasborn in Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co., PA It is recorded that George was married before to an unknown person, which ended in divorce. He later married Esther Bowman. With their family they went to Stark County, Ohio in about 1835 from Pennsylvania, then later to Michigan. In July 1850 this family was resident of Homer Township, Medina, County, Ohio. Also living with them at the time were Rebecca, 11, born in Ohio and Aaron, 14, born in Pennsylvania. Vivian Tubbs information says he went to Stark County, Ohio about 1835 from Pennsylvania then later to Michigan.
