Obituary of Jean Annette Hollinger Mark
Jean Annette Hollinger Mark 15 April 1926 - 13 September 2009Jean Mark passed away suddenly in Medford, Oregon on Sunday, the 13th of September, after a short illness. A resident of Paradise, CA, she was living at the home of her daughter, Janet Coupe in Medford, OR.Born in Philadelphia, PA, Jean was the daughter of the late George Gitt Hollinger and Jane Kline Hollinger. Her family moved to Abbottstown, PA in 1931 to be with family and have gardening space during the hardships of the Depression. Jean attended schools in Abbottstown, York's William Penn High, and Girls' High in Philadelphia. She played the piano, trumpet in the band, was a member of the National Honor Society, and won a Senatorial scholarship to the University of Penn in biology. Her studies were made possible by the support of her extended family. With the death of her father in her sophomore year, she transferred to Gettysburg Collage where she graduated with a BS in Biology.Asa student, she tutored a returning GI in German, John Mark, who courted her at her brother's filling station on the square in Abbottstown. They married in 1950, moved to Lancaster, PA for John's work and raised 5 children. During their long marriage, they also lived in Salt Lake City, UT, La Honda, CA, and retired to Paradise, CA in the Sierra foothills.Jean worked with Lancaster Children's Services, sold real estate, was a Republican Committee woman, and volunteered with numerous charities including the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW, Lions clubs, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts and Red Cross blood drives. She wrote poetry and family stories and was the librarian for her large family history. She was a good cook anda voracious reader. Her life ends with the conclusion of "The Guiding Light" which she followed faithfully from its first airing. She and her husband enjoyed visiting extended family, travel, history touring, camping, hiking and fishing. They drove their RV from Alaska to Guatemala, boated, and water skied. Jean's family was her life, and she will be sorely missed not only by her children, but by her many friends and correspondents. She had a kind word for everyone, a ready ear, and always had an extra place at her table for visitors. She made her husband's career and achievements possible with her organizational skills and undying support. She was a mother with poise, a cool head in a crisis, and a yard full of neighborhood children. She is survived by daughters Merry Mark (Walter Cholawsky) of Christiana, PA, Nancy Mark, of Eugene OR, Susan Young (Curt) of Winston, OR, Janet Coupe (Scott) of Medford, OR, and a brother, William G. Hollinger of York. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John, a son, Thomas, and her brother, George. She leaves 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, nieces & nephews.Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. A celebration of her life will be held October 23 in Paradise CA.
