Johann Philip Lau was the oldest of eight children born to Christian Lau and Anne Cleophe Frey. He was born on 29 March 1722 in the town of Sulzthal (near current day Lembach) in Northern Alsace, along the present border of France and Germany. Philip was ten years old when his family immigrated to America on the ship John & William. They arrived in Philadelphia on 17 October 1732. Philip was 41 when he was naturalized in Manchester Township on 24 September 1763. It was a timeof persistent Indian attacks on the Pennsylvania frontier. Philip married Magdalena Gentzler, oldest child of Johann Conradt Gentzler and Maria Catharina Lotz,around 1760. They had six children between 1761 and 1773. Philip Lau secured more than 500 acres of land in York County, through seven land warrants from the proprietaries of the Province of Pennsylvania.
