He was married on Aug. 28, 1684 to Rebecca WILBORE (b. Jan. 13, 1664; d. Aug. 23, 1725), daughter of Shadrach WILBORE and Mary DEAN, and widow of Mr. PIERCE.During his life, Abraham was an active and important citizen of Taunton and (later) Dighton, MA. Abraham Hathaway was one of the citizens of Dighton that signed a petition in 1708 to turn Dighton into indepedent township, breaking off from Taunton. In 1712, he was elected as one of two "Surveyors for Ways" for the new town of Dighton. In 1715 "Deacon Abraham Hathaway" was given a charter to run the ferry across the Taunton River. He held a number of other jobs and positions in the community; these included being a blacksmith, a ferryman across the Taunton River, a Deacon of the South Congregational Church, serving for 35 years as the Town Clerk of Taunton (it was noted thathe was "One of the finest penmen of colonial New England").He also faithfully served in the Taunton Militia , serving as a soldier in King Phillip's War in Capt. Daniel Henchman's Co. in the July attack on Mt. Hope. The following year Abraham served under Capt. Sam Wadsworth. He was a member of the Militia 4/8/1682. In 1691 he served in King William's War, under Capt. Thomas Leonard, 1st Military Co. of Taunton, 4th Sq. Abraham died Aug. 23, 1725, in Dighton, MA and was buried next to his wife Rebecca in the Fox Cemetery in what was then Dighton (east side of the GreatTaunton River), but what is now Berkely, MA.
