John Gorham was thought to have come to American aboard the "Philip" in June 1635. John Howland, his father-in-law, sold to him half the lands in Marshfield, Massachusetts which Howland had bought from Governor William Bradford.John was elected Constable of Marshfield in 1648. He was made a freeman on June 4, 1650, anda member of the Grand Inquest of Plymouth Colony. He and his family moved to Yarmouth, Massachusetts in 1652, and then went on to Barnstable where he owned a grist mill and a tannery. He was a surveyor of highways in 1654. As a Captain anda Colonel in the militia in King Philip's War, he took part in the Narragansettfight in December 1675, defending the company against the Indians.
     He was wounded and died of a resulting fever from an infected gunshot wound.
