He married Doris Evelyn Baker on 29 May 1924 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. His name is spelled "Morris" on some records. It is likely he changed his name at some point. Gravestone lists date of birth as 10/28/1879 and this is wrong. His son, Arthur Howland had a bible given to Maurice by his mother on his birthday September 1st Maurice & Carrie lived in Hannah's house when they first married. They were married by Edward H. Macy, a minister in North Westport. Mauriceonce attended Moses Brown School in Providence, R.I. Albert T. The school's yearbooks that arein the possession of Albert T. Howland state Maurice was on the football team, tennis and ran track. The school records show that Maurice played center (football) and although very light for his position, played a very aggressive game, through the entire season did not find an opposing center too strong for him Maurice is listed at the beginning of the Spring term 1896 through Spring 1897. Maurice took beginning physics, arithmetic, spelling, composition, Greek history Roman history & bookkeeping. He had a 98.5 average in arithetic I. Maurice must alsohave learned some wood carvings because there are some picture frames he carved. Maurice used to camp in a shack with his 2 sons on an island in the Wwestport River. At one time Maurice worked for the town of Westport, MA., on roads. Sometime around 1906/07 Maurice lost practically all his sight when a chain broke andwent across his eyes while pulling out stumps with a team of horses working forthe town of Dartmouth, MA. Maurice usually had a large garden of vegetables andfished from the Westport River, selling his catches. WWI draft card on record with his signature. Occupation listed as common laborer. 1920 US census list Maurice and his brother Philip living alone together. In later years he lived in a building in back of the present house at 38 Pine Hill Road Westport, MA., where he also died at age 69 years, 6 months, 4 days. It is believed Maurice had some sort of cancer and was scheduled to go to the hospital a few days after his death. Death was caused by suicide. If neither Arthur or Florence Howland survive me, then it goes to Hazel Collins, Malcolm S. Collins or Kenneth Collins orthe survivor of their issue. If none of them survive me, then the property goesto Pacific Union Church of Westport. Maurice appointed Hazel Collins to be executrix of his will. Will signed 8/3/1946. Wilfred Merrill Howland Sr. Wilfred Merrill Howland Sr. was born on 29 Aug 1901 in Westport, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA as the second child of Maurice Chester Howland and Carrie Lilian Crapo. He had one sibling, namely: Arthur Lincoln. He died on 25 May 1975 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. When he was 22, He married Doris Evelyn Baker, daughter of Thomas L Baker and Minnie Warren Little, on 29 May 1924 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. Wilfred Merrill Howland Sr. and Doris Evelyn Baker had the following children: 1. Albert Thomas Howland was born on 25 Mar 1938 in Acushnet, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. He married Marjorie Ann Howland on 16 Apr 1966 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. 2. Wlifred Merrill Howland Jr. was born on 08 Aug 1929 in New Bedford, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. He married Lorraine M. Mederios on 28 Feb 1951 in Westport, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA. Wilfred changed his name from Chester Wendell. The 1920 US census lists him as living in New Bedford with his mother, brother and Uncle Orin in a rented home. Wilfred was working as a machinist at Tonet Drill. Wilfred & Doris were married by Frank E. Ramsdell, North Congregational pastor, in his home with Wilfred's brother, Arthur & his wife Florence as witnesses. For a short while after their marriage they lived in Hartford, CT. The 1930 US census lists him as a drill maker in a machine shop and owning his own home. About 1930 they bought a house on Drift Road in Westport and sold it not long after and went to live on Pine Hill Rd. in Maurice's house. Because of illness Doris went to stay with her sister Mildred Smead in Milton, MA. about June 1945. Wilfred bought a house and went tolive in Fall River, MA. in June 1949 and sold it in October 1957. Wilfred also had a cottage right on the Westport River. I believe in the 1930 to 1945 time frame. In the early 1950s he had another cottage in the same area, but not on the water. This area of cottages is down a lane across from mailbox #s 1634-1636 on Drift Road in Westport. All cottages down that lane have these mailbox numbers. In October 1957 Wilfred moved back to 38 Pine Hill Rd, Westport. He worked at the Newport Torpedo Station before and during WW II. During most of his life his trade was machinist. About 1950 he entered the roofing and sidewall trade. Wilfred enjoyed swimming in the Westport River on Westport Town Beach. Wilfred was admitted to Union Hospital in New Bedford, MA. from his home on February 8, 1970. On Feb. 19th he was taken to a nursing home in Westport on Drift Road. He enteredUnion Hospital again June 12, 1972 and was then sent to Acushnet Nursing Home in Acushnet, MA., on June 30, 1972. On April 21, 1975 Wilfred entered Union Hospital yet again and died May 25, 1975. The Social Security Index says his last residence was Wareham, MA. which perhaps his son Wlifred Jr.'s address. The funeral was May 28th and he is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Westport, MA. next to his mother & wife.
