                   When a youth, he served 2 years in the Steel Works at Scranton, in 1885 he was engaged by a Mining Company in Venezuela; it took 21 days to arrive at the "Callio Gold Mine". He remained there 4 years, and when he left he was Chief Engineer.He returned to the States, he entered the Boston School of Technology. In 1893,he accepted an offer of the DeBeers Diamond Minimg Company if Kimberley South Africa, where he remained until 1898. After leaving Kimberley he studied at Columbia University New York City, and then to Douglas Island Alaska as manager of the large gold mines located there. A year after he was again called to South Africa, to the gold mines of Johannesburg. When the book was written, he had retiredfrom active business and had a residence on the Isle of Jersey, England; spending much time in other Countries.
