                   William was a Major in the personal service of the king.  When Civil War broke out, Oliver Cromwell personally set a price for the capture of William.  William fled England to join his younger brother, Mathew, in America.  His brothers, Henry and Jeffrey, left England of their own choice for America.  The Gooches did not arrive as poverty stricken refugees.  William was the York County reresentative to the Virginia House of Burgesses and a member of the Governor's Council.
