NOTES: Matthew was a State Senator in 1876 & Lieutentant Governor of South Carolina in 1870. He entered the Confederate Army June 1861 as a Captain. He lost his right foot at the Battle of Brandy Station. The war left him (at age 29) with one leg gone, a wife, 3 children to support, 70 slaves emancipated, a dept of $15,000, & $1.57 Cash.
